Question Number 113

Do cell phones cause brain cancer?
Answer: Yes. Probably. According to a new study released by the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), cell phone use is associated with an increased risk of "glioma and acoustic neuroma." Their findings do not quantify the risk, although their press release points to a 2004 study which showed a 40% increased risk of one type of brain cancer in individuals who use their cell phones for half an hour or more every day for ten years.

Another answer: The higher frequencies of light waves (near the ultraviolet end of the spectrum) are absorbed by gas molecules in the atmosphere at a greater rate than lower frequencies (near the infrared end of the spectrum). The gas molecules then emit the photons they have absorbed, at the same frequency as the originally absorbed wavelength. The blue light emitted in this manner then encounters other nearby air molecules, and in a process called Rayleigh Scattering, it is bounced around in all directions until it eventually reaches the eyes of an observer.
